DH and I haven't spoken to MIL in a few weeks. Things have been rocky with our relationship with her, but they've been even worse since dd was born a few months ago. She's been acting possessive and has been extremely rude, so she's been on TO. She's called and texted both DH and I. Neither of us have responded.
She did leave me a message last week that her grandfather was very sick. I relayed the message to DH, but he didn't do anything about it. So she texted me last night saying her grandfather passed away. I felt like I couldn't just ignore it, so I gave her my condolences. She responded that another of her friends passed away a few hours later. I'm not sure if she's fishing for sympathy or what, so I simply reply that I'm sorry. She responds that she didn't want to text DH in case he was at work. He has a very stressful job.
I told him this morning, and he just said okay. I always leave it up to him on how to respond. I would prefer MIL not give me this kind of information in the first place, but it's hard when she's gives me this kind of info via text. So now he is at work, and MIL texts and asks me if I told him. I feel stuck. I can respond to her and say yes, in which case she will probably be angry with DH, and risk him being upset with me in turn for having to deal with her. Or I can not respond to her at all and deal with her being angry with me. I'm leaning toward not responding at all, but I can see how bad that makes me look too, and I also don't want to deal with possible backlash from her. What do I do? He won't be off work until after I go to bed tonight.
