I've been here quite a while, know the rules, first time starting a post here.
I have two DDs. They love animals though we have none of our own. We went to my uncle and aunt's for thanksgiving, and they had their dog out. She's spoiled and travels with my uncle often. She's also a bigger dog. She's been around my girls before with no issues.
My 2-year-old was petting her and walked around her, looking like she was getting ready to walk away. She was a few feet away from the dog when she attacked her. My DD was knocked down hard, and my DH got to her fast. My uncle was right there and automatically starts telling the dog how it's okay and petting her.
I reached my DD right after DH picked her up, took her, and left the room. I needed to get out of there. I checked her out-- she has scratches on her forehead, a bruise, and a cut in her mouth. I'm livid. My aunt came out to make sure she was okay, and kind of excused her fear and scratches. I packed up out things, put the girls' shoes on, gathered my DH, who was also livid, and left.
We took our DD to the doctor today to make sure she was okay. The cut in her mouth is not from the dog. The doctor said it looks like she bit the inside of her lip when she fell. I've been replaying the whole thing over and over in my head.
My observations: my uncle didn't punish the dog or get her out of the room. She stayed in the same place she was when she attacked when we left. My DH said my aunt also went into the living room to make sure the dog was okay. That makes me feel like my child is worth less than their dog. I feel like this was handled all wrong. I'm livid. My uncle apologized, but I'm livid.
What do I do? Do I call animal control? I just can't believe she was attacked like that. She's fine and back to her happy self, but the fact that a spoiled dog was told it's okay that she attacked my child makes me so angry for her. We will never spend any holiday or any other day at a function they will be at ever again. They're known to take their dog everywhere. Where do I go from here?
