PILs Christmas Gift Boundaries?

Hi there-

DW and I just found out from her sister that MIL/FIL bought DS a tricycle for Christmas. They haven't said a word to us, this is all them. In MIL's words "Every toddler NEEDS to have a tricycle".

Am I right to think this should be a parents-only gift, or at least the kind of thing they should've asked us about first?

1) I think the first bike is a milestone that we should be part of (if not leading)

2) It's an item that takes up a lot of space so I think it'd be good to have a heads up

3) I'd prefer to let DS pick out his own (he's only 18 months) when he's a little older.

Our instinct is to nip it in the bud and to tell them to return it, but wanted some other perspective as to whether this should bother me at all and if so, what the proper reaction should be.

Thanks!
