My boys don't remember MIL, so that isn't a problem. We cut her off almost 2 years ago and my 4 year old just brought me an ornament that has a picture of DH as a child and MIL, asking me who the woman with him was. I skirted around it by saying "That's not you! That's daddy when he was your age." That seemed to appease him, but it got me wondering how to approach it in the future when he undoubtedly will ask again. How did you or do plan on explaining in an age appropriate way what's going on? He absolutely doesn't need to know the details until he's much older, but I'm figuring it's only a matter of time before he says something along the lines of "If nanny is your mommy, who is daddy's mommy?"
