Background trigger!
Okay, so my DF and I live with his mom in her house. A little background: I have been pregnant before while living here. When I found out, I quit cold turkey, no issues. Everyone stopped smoking in the house because I quit, everything was good. Even then, I had tons of complications and my daughter ended up passing away.
FF two years later, I find out I'm pregnant again, I'm overjoyed! I quit smoking again, haven't touched a cigarette since March 25th. The same things are said. Rule is no one smokes in the house. But this time it's different. My MIL's room is next to ours. She smokes in her room with her door open, and the smoke comes into our room, pisses me off. If she's in the living room watching TV, she opens the front door and smokes in there, but the smoke still flows into our room down the hallway. PISSED OFF. She smokes in the car when I'm in the car. The only one who actually smokes outside is my DF.
Another thing that pisses me off even more. Our daughter passed away due to malpractice. We're expecting our settlement in the next month and have been considering using it to buy the house my MIL rents. She wants us to so we don't have to move and she can stay and pay us rent for 6 months, it would help us a lot. But smoke stays in furniture and paint for months, even years. I don't want to buy this house if it means buying a smoke-infested home for my baby. Not gonna happen.
My issue is this: Is there anything I can do about it? I've tried asking and no one takes me seriously, I'm too nice. This is my MIL's house (I do pay rent but it is her house), and she didn't have to open her home to me years ago. But I'm so PISSED because I'm at risk for preterm labor and so I'm trying to cut smoke down around me. I'm not trying to expose myself to ANYTHING that could cause that again. How do I bring this up to her without sounding like a total bitch? Should I just go stay with my parents for a month until we get our settlement and buy a different house?
