Last Thanksgiving, we were blindsided with spending the holiday with my BIL's girlfriend's family. We weren't told they would be coming and we show up to them there and we had never met before. It was awkward and both families pretty much just separated. It doesn't help that they spoke Spanish the entire time even though they all spoke English perfectly. No, I'm not racist. I just feel like it's rude to have conversations in a different language in front of other people especially when Spanish is their 2nd language.
So ever since then, DH's family expects us to spend every holiday with them. We feel that they aren't OUR family. BIL has to deal with them but we don't. We've told MIL this every damn holiday and have said we have don't have to see them, we don't see them at all the rest of the year anywhere. BIL had a fight with DH today over it because we said we just want to spend the holidays with our family and BIL insisted that they are our family.
So would consider your BIL's girlfriend's family your family?
