My husband is an only child. His parents divorced when he was one and his mom raised him, basically alone. She never dated anyone, even once my husband moved out (she still refers to my fil as "daddy" which is a whole nother weirdness). Everyone thinks she is the sweetest nicest person ever. I think she is super annoying and inappropriate.
When I was in labor with my son she kept trying to force her way into the delivery room. My sister had to keep yelling at her to sit down. I had made clear that I wanted the first hour after the birth to just my husband and I. She told the nurses that she needed to come in, they got confused and thought she was my mom so when they told me my mom needed to come in I said ok. Then in walks my mil. I was so confused, and I had just had a baby so I ended up making them go get my parents and sister so they wouldn't be left out. There was so much confusion and so many people somehow my husband didn't get to hold our son, but everyone else did. Once I recovered and realized what had happened I was so mad. For months after she kept making little comments about how she should have been allowed in the delivery room the whole time. I finally snapped and told her it was my decision not to have her and she had no right to be in the room. She hasn't said anything since.
She also made a comment about my son's name when my husband was out of the room. She said "Did you say Jameson or Justin? Are you sure about the name Jameson, you know the nickname for Jameson is Jamie and that is a girl name. Isn't Justin better?" I said " my boyfriend of 5 years before your son was named Justin. I don't think your son would appreciate that name choice."
Other than those two incidents she hasn't really done anything specific. She is just really into telling the same stories about how special and wonderful my husband is. She literally worships him. I think she has an alter in her basement.
Ff to my husband's birthday she sends him a text saying "I love you so much!! The kind that makes me want to burst into tears at the thought of being your mother." And a bunch of other cheesy stuff. Then she showed up at my house with a cake that said "happy birthday daddy" on it. I told my husband I thought it was bizarre and innapropriate. She doesn't get to buy a cake from my son to my husband. He thinks she just meant it as happy birthday, you're a daddy. He tells me I don't understand the simplicity that is his mom. He genuine believes that she is just so kind and sweet and I am misinterpreting her. I think she is going to kill me and try to take my place..jk....kind of.
I guess I just want to see if other people think her behavior around his birthday is over the line. I feel like I'm always irritated with her based on the other two incidents so I could be overreacting.
