TL;DR at bottom
BG: Ok, so last week my MIL (mildly crazy, eccentric, crunchy, minor stomps that have been addressed) gave me an aromatherapy diffuser, along with a blend for my boys (2 and 9 mo) that would boost immunity, help congestion, etc. I'm not really into EOs nor is DH, but I figured, if nothing else it'll smell nice.
YDS got an awful fever for Christmas that would not give him any relief no matter what fever reducers I gave him. Today I decided to break out the diffuser and give it a try. YDS slept all day and woke up with no fever. Still fussy, but not burning up.
DH was concerned about how much YDS slept so I decided to see if there were any side effects to blend which I immediately found out is not supposed to be used around children under ten ("[oils in my blend] are all avoided in younger children because they contain a chemical constituent called cineol 1,8 and menthol. According to Robert Tisserand, in the newest eddition of Essential Oil Safety: menthol and cineol stimulate cold receptors in the lungs, and this triggers a reflex in young children which slows breathing significantly, sometimes dangerously"). I freaked out, yanked the diffuser out of the wall even though it was already turned off, and called poison control. The women couldn't find anything to worry about when the oils were used as an inhalent, and said YDS should be fine.
Everything is fine, but I'm still on this adrenaline surge and feeling terrible. I know I should have done my research before exposing my baby to a new thing, but I just trusted MIL to not give me something that could be dangerous.
I'm not trying to spark an EO discussion, because my fury is focused on my mil right now. How angry do I have a right to be though? How do I approach her with this?
TL;DR- mil gave me an EO blend for my small boys that I later found out is not recommended for children under 10. How much should I be mad at her versus myself for not double checking that it was ok to use?
Queens, I really hope it's ok that I went into depth about the oils- I'm not asking for advice about them, I was just trying to give all the details.
Eta: ambiguity of EOs
