I've posted before about traveling on a long haul flight with a 3 month old to visit my DF's family. I got a mixed bag of advice but appreciate the bluntness and outside perspective.
I'll update on that trip and my current situation now.
I went on the trip with my family and took my DD after her three month shots. Traveling was great at that age everyone was really accomodating and understanding and DD was asleep for most of it. To recap my DF family is 24 hour flight away from us (thank fuck) and we went to give his family the opportunity to meet DD as we wouldn't be flying over anytime soon after this trip. His nan who raised him is getting on etc.
Tge day of the flight I heard that my SD died. This is after years of no communication (also topic of another post - sorry on mobile). I decide to go anyway and see if we can catch another flight back to attend the funeral with my family. Obviously the trip there was a bit of a mind fuck as even though I had CO SD for many years - there was still a residual feeling of loss anger guilt when he died.
Fast forward ..... Trip was a mixed bag of good and bad. His family were generally respectful but a few standouts:
1) FIL who is a smoker who was claiming to have quit was actually smoking and hiding it from me. I had told him no holding the baby if you have smoked without shower/ change of clothes and he would lie and say he hadn't smoked. Asshole.
Before I get flamed for this bear in mind was grieving at the time and really between that, sleep deprivation, thinking I was going crazy because why would he lie to me? - I wasn't myself
2) MIL -called herself 'mummy' to my DD - immediately corrected herself
3) MIL - tried to dictate who could and couldn't hold my daughter
4) both of these assholes were of course infantilising my DF and he Wass willing participant. I thought I was going to have to leave his ass there to crawl up his mother's vagina in peace.
Ok long post I'm going to post and continue on in comments ....
